Practice Overview

John E. Sherman, MD, specializes in spine surgery. He has conducted extensive research on engineering technologies, and focuses on motion preservation (dynesys, artificial total disc, artificial nucleus, and annular repair) and minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Sherman is an industry consultant for Anulex.

In the News

Dr. Sherman responds to the need for Annular Repair in the June 5th issue of Orthopedics This Week – “Anulex Died, But There’s More to the Story”.  “Annual repair is necessary because microdiscectomy frequently fails.  The rate varies, but around 15% of the time you are going to have a symptomatic disc reherniation.”  Learn more here.

Dr. Sherman identifies that Anchorknot herniated disc repair technology can benefit discectomy patients. Read more here.

Patient Testimonials

Robert O.

I would like to thank Dr. Sherman and his staff. I had a 2 level lumbar fusion with implants back in January 1999. Now in 2021, I have lived pain free for all of these years. At 57 years old, my wife and I still travel around the country riding our ATV’s for up to 12 hours a day non-stop and I have never had any back pain return. Prior to surgery, my back would give out 3 times a month and I would crawl around the house in pain. I lived on multiple Advil each day, and now only take them for headaches.

Dr. Sherman treated me in 2000 when I was unable to attend to my own needs, my husband and children did everything. I woke up from my surgery and knew immediately that Dr. Sherman had given me back my life. I have been pain free for 15 years. I owe him so much.

After his son graduated from college, Ken C. and his two sons planned a “bucket list” hiking trip through the Andes Mountains to the legendary Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. Seven weeks before their departure, Ken ruptured two discs in his lower back while playing tennis. “Instead of preparing me for the trip my favorite sport had just knocked me off my feet,” he said. “Not only could I not exercise for the trip, I couldn’t do simple movements like getting into my car without heavy pain medication.” Unable to walk more than 50 feet at a time, Ken consulted with Dr. John Sherman. When Dr. Sherman ordered an MRI, Ken’s trip was just over 4 weeks away and his hopes of completing the hike were fading. “He and I discussed the various treatment options but it was obvious to both of us that I wouldn’t be hiking in my current condition.” Dr. Sherman recommended microdiscectomy surgery on a Friday and it was performed on Monday. “By Tuesday, and I’m not exaggerating, I was pain free,” he said. Shortly thereafter, Ken was taking walks around his neighborhood, slowly increasing his workload. He wasn’t sure he was going on the trip until the day of departure, but opted to give it a try.Ken completed the 4 day hike, which began at an elevation of 11,000 feet and reached an altitude of 14,500 feet before descending into Machu Picchu. He and his sons carried 20-25 backpacks and slept in tents along the way. It was “a trip of a lifetime that would not have taken place without the skills of Dr. John Sherman and the team at Twin Cities Orthopedics,” said Ken.

After suddenly experiencing severe back pain one Saturday, Scott A. (on the right of the photo) visited the TCO | Access walk-in clinic in Edina. Scott had x-rays and an MRI performed and was scheduled to follow up John Sherman, MD (on the left in the photo), a spine surgery specialist.Following his appointment on Wednesday, Scott was scheduled for surgery on Thursday. “I appreciated how quickly everyone acted to get me back on track again,” he said. “From the walk-in clinic on a Saturday morning with unbearable pain to walking out of surgery feeling so much better in only 5 days, everything has been great,” he said. “I really felt like everyone was personally concerned and working so hard on my behalf.”

My G.P. sent me to see Dr. Sherman in 2007 for lower back pain and hip pain. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and needing a new hip. Dr. Sherman operated in June of 2007 to correct the stenosis. Dr. Szalapski operated in August of 2007 to replace my right hip. Both surgeries went very well, I couldn’t have asked for better results. I have been back to see Dr. Sherman for neck pain and pain and numbness in both hands. I was diagnosed with carpel tunnel in both arms. I have recently had surgery for carpel tunnel in my right arm (Dr. Bakker) and I’m looking forward to having the left arm done. The doctors and surgeons at Twin Cities Orthopedics have met my needs in every way. I recommend Twin Cities Orthopedics to everyone!
